Creative Writing

Tutor:Nick Cook
No class on 5 october (Open evening and 26 October, which is half-term).

Nick will be pleased to hear from new learners and those who have already attended a course.

This course will develop your skills as a writer. We will learn using talks by published writers, group discussion, role play, and analysis of published work. An important part of the course will be to read a novel which will be analysed towards the end of the course. The purpose of the analysis is to learn the "tricks of the trade" of successful writers.

Topics looked at in the course will include "show not tell", character, structure and plotting, how to edit your work, how to market your work.

But of course the most important part of the course will be students' own writing. An important part of the way teach is to shout encouragement from the touchline as you improve your skills by actually doing it. Optional homework will be set and feedback given. Students will be encouraged to discuss each other's work. This will help you develop your critical ability - essential when it comes to editing your own first drafts.

The course will benefit anyone who loves the written word and wants to improve their writing.

The course tutors:

Nick Cook: Journalist, many years experience in helping people realise their potential as writers, President of Verulam Writers' Circle and recent runner up in "Shortstoryradio" short story competition.

Volunteer:Janet Baldey: Short Story Writer published in womens' magazines. Janet recently won the Crystal Decanter Competition for fiction presented by Verulam

Between us we can give you feedback on a wide range of subject areas.

Introduction to Economics

Tutor:Tim Miller
Personal Introduction
Hello there, my name is Tim Miller, I am a teacher at The Hemel Hempstead School, I hold a BA in Economics from the University of Liverpool and I am currently studying part-time for an MSc in Agricultural Economics with SOAS, University of London. Yet it was cycling to school, past rice fields and factories, houses and shopping malls that the true majesty of Adam Smith’s invisible hand dawned upon me. I saw before me thousands of people whom I had never met making thousands of tiny self-interested decisions about how to spend their time, their money and the various other resources at their disposal. I find it amazing that perhaps more than any one big idea, it is these millions of tiny judgements that bit by bit shape the world around us. Whether or not these decisions are leading us towards a better world is a matter for debate; is our self-interest depleting the Earth’s natural resources to apocalyptic levels or is it giving billions of people around the world the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and shape their own destiny? It is this question and the thousands of others that fall under the realm of Economics that make it such a fascinating subject.
No previous study is required so please come along.

Introduction to Planting Design Course.
If summer has left your garden looking tired and shapeless, why not have a think about refreshing its planting for next year? This short series of courses will introduce you to the key concepts of planting design, on the way looking at what is going on in the garden through autumn and into winter. We’ll look at some of the plants that are ‘performing’ at the moment – and hopefully help each other get the most out of the ideas, and out of our gardens.
The course tutor is Andy McClarnon, a professional gardener and garden designer, trained a Capel Manor College who runs his own design practice at www.possiblegardens.co.uk . Andy is Aldbury based, so knows the opportunities, and constraints, of gardening in this part of the world.

Italian 3

Tutor:Grazia Bernareggi
My lessons are for intermediate/advanced students and the main aims are conversation and discussion, plus reading and translating from Italian into English.

The reading book we use is specifically written for intermediate students and it contains many idioms used in Italy to enrich the students knowledge of the spoken language. Some grammar will be revised as it comes up from the reading book and it will be reinforced with some exercises contained in the book itself.

Grazia is a very experienced italian tutor. Her sessions are informal and involve plenty of conversation. learners report that they learn lots from her classes. This group has been running for some time and really welcomes new learners. It has a strong level of enthusiasm and is very supportive - ideal for anyone who already has the basics under their belt and would enjoy good chats in Italian.

Learn to Knit

Tutor:Sally Spriggs
No class 5 October (Open Evening) 26 October - (Half-term)
7.30 – 9.00pm
Description: Knitting for beginners and those who have some basic skills but wish to gain confidence and progress further.
Tutor: Sally Spriggs, knitwear designer
The traditional craft of Knitting comes and goes in popularity and at the moment it is definitely hip, cool and trendy. Film stars are doing it (both male & female), children and teenagers are doing it, and it’s a must for yummy mummies, and possibly daddies!
But where do you start? Whether you have no knitting experience, or learnt only the basic stitches from your grandma, this 8-week course will get you started and give you the skills and inspiration to create your own designs.
The course starts with the basic concept of knitting and in the first session you will learn a fun new way of knitting that gets your fingers working! You will quickly progress to knitting with needles: learning the basic stitches; changing colours; increasing and decreasing; and creating more complex stitch combinations.
Sally will help you to de-code knitting patterns (American and English) and understand the different weights of yarn and needle sizes. She has an extensive range of pattern books, samples and web-links to inspire you and give you the confidence to go it alone! As well as the knitting samples that you will create in class, you can start your own projects as soon as you feel ready knowing that there will be time for troubleshooting each week if you get stuck.
All the yarn, needles and notes you will need for the course (excluding your own projects) are included in the fees. In addition, you will have the opportunity to join a group visit (costing approximately £10) to the world-renowned Knitting & Stitching Show at Alexander Palace in Friday 8th or Sat 9th October. At the show you will see some of the most innovative knitting and textiles around, and will also be able to buy fabulous yarns and other craft materials that are just not available locally.
Tutor Profile: Being an at home mum has allowed Sally to re-discovered her creative side having originally gained a degree in design at the London College of Fashion, and then worked as a specialist hand-knitwear designer. This was back in the 1980s and despite the current interest in the decade, it was not a great time to be a hand-knitwear designer! She followed a completely different career path eventually ending up as an IT trainer. Now, Sally has the right combination of skills to help others unlock the pleasure of creating something for themselves. The art of knitting was once something that most women, and many men, were accomplished at. It is not difficult to do and is a very portable and therapeutic craft. Sally is passionate about keeping craft skills alive and is also an official volunteer for the Crafts Council ‘Knit 1, Pass it On’ initiative. This aims to teach junior school children crafts that are not being passed down through the generations in the traditional way. She would like to play a small part in this and hopefully inspire others to take up their needles and knit!
Course Fee: £74 includes needles and selection of yarns

Photography (Digital)

Tutor:Carole NIven
This course is now planned to run for 5 sessions from 21 September, 2010. (There is no class on 5 October - open evening - or 26 October, half term)

Course description:
Digital Photography – An opportunity to understand how to get the best pictures, both technically and aesthetically in a relaxed atmosphere – no competition and no pressure!

Tutor Profile:
Carole Niven is an artist and an established professional photographer. She loves passing on her skills and runs weekend courses as well as evening and leisure classes.

“Hertfordshire is a small corner of England offering a wealth of wonderful opportunities for stunning photographs all year round. We are surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK and it is all right here on our doorstep.

It seems that everyone now owns a digital camera but it is often difficult to understand all the functions and settings to get the best pictures. In the course of my daily work I am constantly asked for advice, hints and tips on how best to use a digital camera and I enjoy that 'light bulb' moment when people learn a new technique.

Testimonials:
"Hi Carole, just wanted to thank you so much for the very interesting (and informative) day that I had on Saturday. I look forward to hearing about your other courses so that I can book another day in. I am quite amazed at just how much I did pick up on that day and have enjoyed trying out my various settings on the camera." (Teresa).

"Just to thank you so much for the brilliant weekend course. Such a pleasure to learn in the relaxed atmosphere and to come away with a gift of understanding my camera!" (Jackie)

"Just a short note to thank you for a very pleasant and instructive weekend...we all learnt a great deal and our photographs will show this improvement. From a very satisfied "student"" (Richard)
